H5N2 a.k.a. bird flu is back, this time in Pedernales. Agriculture Minister Salvador Jimenez has confirmed the re-emergence of the bird flu, although it is the first reported case in the DR in almost two months. Jimenez says that the case was detected as a result of vigilance on the part of the authorities. He added that the country is waiting for certification from the World Organization for Animal Health. The fear of bird flu has led to some devastating consequences for the DR's chicken and egg production sector. After the first confirmed report in December 2007, a number of countries banned Dominican chicken and egg imports. After a month the ban was repealed except in Haiti, where the ban is still in effect.
