Leading Dominican businessman Jose L. "Pepin" Corripio has been awarded the Order of the Bright Star with Great Sash by Taiwanese President Chen Shui-Bian. This is Taiwan's highest civilian honor. Corripio was cited for his work ethic and for assisting in building the outstanding relations between Taiwan and the Dominican Republic. Corripio accepted the award in the name of his family and the 8,000 employees that work for his many companies. Corripio was accompanied by his wife and one of his daughters as well as the Dominican ambassador to Taiwan, Victor Martinez. According to sources, this is the first time that Taiwan has honored a businessman in this way, and invited him to a formal dinner at the seat of government. President Chen visited the Dominican Republic in September, 2005, at which time he invited Corripio to visit Taiwan. President Leonel Fernandez is expected to visit Taiwan next June.
Taiwan recently announced during a dinner attended by Corripio in Taipei the creation of a US$250 million fund in which the Taiwanese government would offer matching funds of up to 49% of the capital.
