Four miners, all young men, died in an 80-foot deep hole while searching for larimar, the pale blue semi-precious stone coveted by jewelers around the world, which is only found in the southwest of the Dominican Republic, near Barahona. According to reports in several newspapers, the compressor that fed fresh air into the tunnel failed, and the miners asphyxiated. The victims were Manolin Terrero, 25; Nelson Matos Felix, 25; Melvin Gonzalez Raiirez, 20; and William Felix Medina, 17. Initial reports indicate that when the compressor failed there was not enough good air for the men to scramble to the surface. The authorities noted that the precarious conditions of these informal diggings have led to several deaths in the past.
