Professors and employees at the UASD (Universidad Autonoma de Santo Domingo) voted to continue their strike for higher pay after a heated session at the Aula Magna on the main university campus. According to Listin Diario, the session became chaotic as students clashed with employees and professors as they tried to work out a unified position regarding the 19-day strike. University rector Roberto Reyna expressed his regrets about the decision to continue the fight to obtain a wage increase of 30%. Previously, the government had offered a 20% wage increase in the 2007 budget, but this was rejected. Dominican Cardinal Nicolas de Jesus Lopez Rodriguez called on the parties to reach a solution because 160,000 students should not be forced to lose an entire semester of study.
