For those of you that like the late night disco scene in Sosua are gonna be in for a treat. Last night they opened a new disco located inside the Sosua Bay hotel. I had no idea it was opening till 1:30 am at which time a I was givin a wrist band at clasicos and was told about it. It must be the same owners of clasicos as all the same workers are there. The disco is pretty nice , state of the art sound systems , lighting with laser beams shooting across the place and bubles coming down on the dance floor.Around the perimeter of the place is a second level where u can look down on the action. There is also an area toward the back with stadium type standing where u can look down on the action and keep your drinks on the tables. Theres 2 bars and 2 dance floors.I think this means the end of the disco in the casino as this place is only a 3 minute walk from clasicos. I left a 4:45 am last night and the place was still open.

I am not a Disco Stu as you may imagine (for one thing my hairstyle is all wrong) but I would visit any disco where the music is quiet enough to hold a conversation in at least some part of the seating area. No chance of that here, I suppose?

Is there a cover charge,? Do they allow the chicas in? Sounds like a good alternative to the motoconcho trip out to the Casino.

Is this inside the new Sosua Bay Casino Bldg on the ground floor?
I was in there last week, it looked really nice, they were finishing the lighting installation.

It for us younger guys, who want to fuck something at 1:30am, then go back to the strip for 1 more...

But it's gonna hurt the negotiating game for guys who want to be done by 1:30am with their chic, cause not chics can always go to the disco next door... but maybe not..

I think this means the end of the disco in the casino as this place is only a 3 minute walk from clasicos. I left a 4:45 am last night and the place was still open.

It might mean the end of Playa Chiquita Casino itself.

It will mean the end to their price gouging for sure.

But having two will keep either from screwing the after hours clients.

Hopefully there's enough business to keep both running.

The drinks are the same price as Classicos, and if you speak 3 words of Spanish you DO NOT have to pay the "cover" charge.

You are on a roll today!

I didn't say anything about the cover charge. We didn't pay that.

I'm talking about going from not paying for drinks, to paying for them.

Now I could be wrong, but during my last trip there, we were there before Classico's was closed.

When that time arrived, the same waitress who was serving us and who had been getting tipped, told us that the free beverages stopped when the disco opened for the after hours business.

Last trip there was at Thanksgiving.

There were 6 of us there, playing cards and slots, and it was the same for all of us. We all speak some Spanish

My point is that they start charging you because Classico's closes and you have no other place to go if you don't want to go to bed yet.

I can understand a cover charge for the disco, because those people aren't spending on the tables or machines, but they shouldn't change policy for the casino patrons.

I would imagine that they need to make some distinction between disco patron and Casino patrons. Maybe give hand stamps to the people who buy chips?

The only time I avoided the cover was when was at the tables first.

So what is the cover charge situation at hese repspective places? My last trip I had to pay to go upstairs to Classicos and I have since stopped frequenting the casino disco since the cover is discreminatory against gringos.

A cover for all guys is OK or a cover for everyone is oK but a cover only for gringo men sucks. I stand out as a gringo. I speak atleast 3 words in spanish. What words can I use to get them to not charge me? I guess I am being a jerk since it is not alot of money but the blatant "over charge the gringo" shit wears on you after a while.

What happens with sankie pankies and gringo women. Are the gringo women being charged entrance also.

Hey;

It doesn't really matter, because they give you a ticket for a drink. You give them 100 pesos down there and you get a drink that would cost you 100 pesos. It's a wash.

They are looking to make sure that people aren't wandering in and out without them not even getting the price of a drink from you.

I can't speak to the Sanky situation. I would expect so, though.

Why aren't Dominican's charged?

It does matter, If I wanna do a quick lap, why the fuck should I have to pay RD100 while locals come in for free.

Just pay the 3 bucks and pound down a drink whiles doing your puta lap. A good puta lap can take 20 minutes and for you that is 2 drinks.

I've seen dominicans pay the 100 at classicos to get in, just there aren't many local guys anymore...

I mean it's kinda like in Vegas man... Locals get in free or just pay less once they flash the local id...

ElPlomero

The girls would just hang out in the bar to avoid the payment and that would screw up the flow of the place.

You'd also go inside and no new chicas would be coming in.

They want you to buy their drinks, not them.

I'm talking practical here.

Of course they could charge them. They can charge anyone.

Actually, if they could charge any of the chicas, it's the pretty ones who have a good chance of being taken that could afford to pay.

I cannot figure out why the dominicans clothing stores wish to charge us different prices then they do the locals. I know we have more money then they do, but, if they charge us some ridiculus price, then we dont buy it and they lose a sale. On the other hand, i guess they can afford to lose 5 customers they would have had, (if the prices were the same way for us versus the locals), as long as one customer pays the gringo price.

I know when i go to the Philippines, i bring only 1 suit case with some clothes in it and another empty one to buy my clothes while i am there. I am stimulating theyre econemy in more ways then just sex and booze. And yes, they see u as a gringo(kano) and will try to ask for more then what they want, but, if u negotiate, u will get it at the same price the locals get it for, or damn close to it.

I am surprised the dominicans dont work the same way. I mean , a sale of any kind is a profit for them and maybe it puts that days meal on the table, with the customer walking away, its not in any way profitable for them.

Everyoen has a price and depending on your negotiation skills, i am sure u could get it for close to what the locals get it for.

Most people (tourists) don't know its even happening. This is why I posted what I did....just know that you can bargain down for just about anything and be prepared to walk away from a "great deal only for you"...you will be suprised on how low they will go. On the other side of the coin, you will have chica's that will turn down 1,000 peso's from you and take 500 peso's from a local an hour later.....
I just posted that I was pulled over and received a 1,000 peso fine for a seat-belt violation.....I was saught out and a police officer ran out in the middle of the street and waved me over to stop.....If I understood a little more spanish I would of understood that he was asking for 300 peso's and I would not of received a ticket. I didn't know what was going on and got the ticket and had to pay 1,000 peso's for it....now do you think a local could even afford a 1,000 peso ticket? Its fucked up down there, but keep reading the board, learn more and more (I will always wear my seat-belt now) and the difference between you and the locals will be less and less....also know that the average worker in Sosua makes 6,000 peso's a month...that is less than $200.00!

I cannot figure out why the dominicans wish to charge us different prices then they do the locals.

Sosúa boasts another new disco
The casino being built alongside Hotel Sosúa Bay is finally reaching the completion stage.

After One DiscotecBut it's more than just a casino - there will be conference and meeting facilities, as well as apartments. A new disco has been set up on the ground floor and is now fully furnished. This disco is called 'After One' - which is a good choice because it will be an addition to the current dance venues such as Merengue Bar, SeaCret's and the Latino Bar. When these discos have to close at 1:30 (weekdays) and 2:30 (weekends) then you can now move on to the After One, which will stay open until the early hours of the morning.

ChandeliersThe disco has been beautifully furnished, with a small bar to the left of the entrance, which leads to the first dance floor. An long oval bar has also been set up in the middle of the room, then there's a second dance floor with a large bar at the end. There are seats to the left of the room, which provide a good overview of the dance floor. Everything has been fitted out using luxurious materials. The lighting gives a good atmosphere, with sidelights and chandeliers. The disco can certainly compete with luxury dance venues in Europe or the USA.
Sosúa can now boast of yet another excellent disco, where people can enjoy themselves even if it's after 1am (After One).

I'm sure i will find out when I get there but exactly where is Sosua Bay Hotel? Reading it is walking distance from Classico's which is great compared to the old Casino....the business there must be taking a big hit ever since the new disco opened....

Make a right leaving Mora Mai...the huge resort on your right heading down the ramp to the main beach. It's the only 5 story building in Sosua!

I guess then you don't want to go out to eat or go shopping either? At alot of the restaurents they have two menu's (tourists and locals) It goes for shopping as well......last time I was there I brought a dress for one of my regulars ($7.00 at Kohl's clearance) and decieded to buy her shoes to go with the dress......she begged me not to come into the store with her....she said it would cost double if I went iwith her. I gave her 300 peso's and she came back with a nice pair of heels and change.
I'm not trying to start a argument, just know that when ever and where ever you are while in the Dominican Republic you will be charged more and more often. JMHO

I had the same experience during my December trip. We had returned from Jarabacoa and my ATFs hair (past her sholders) needed done as we had been rafting, hiking, waterfalls etc. and needed her hair done prior to us visiting her family.

She left me at a table drinking Presidentes...and told me she'd call when she was ready. (She didn't want the shop keeper to see GRINGO) Five beers later, she calls and I stroll in to pay the tab....$200pesos ($6USD). I left the girl in the salon $100DRP tip and we left.

I fully concur with TPDog and El Capitan. As much as I hate having to sit in the car around the corner cooling my heels, I've learned prices multiply with a gringo involved. Recently, in SDQ, my novia went to a hairdresser who quoted her 500 pesos but later when she went back they had seen her with me in the street and the price jumped to 1000 pesos. So I've learned patience and she does the poor Dominicana act and saves me money.
Hell, I live in Miami and here we have three prices. Latinos, gringos who speak Spanish and the rest of you Americanos.

Saturday night they were charging 150 pesos entrance fee or cover charge for entry after 1.30 am for Dominicans and gringos alike, no exceptions. Chicas free admission.
Previously no charge but hadn't been there for a couple of weeks so was surprised to see this but it does keep some of the 'riff-raff' out.

I was there last week, After one is nice, has good top shelf booze and presidentes and bohemia, etc. It is more fancy looking inside than Classiscos, supposedly the same owners, and after Classicos closes, everyone who hasnt hooked up with a chica or isnt too tired to still party goes there. That means that all the chicas who havent found a gringo yet all go there too.
The music is similar to classico's. hip hop, reggaeton, and merengues mostly.

the real fuckers that rip you off in Sosua are the taxis. They charge the Dominicans half of what they charge us. They try to charge $50 at night time for a taxi ride to and from sosua and puerto plata back and forth where if you are Dominican or with one of have negotiating skills and speak spanish you can get it for 1000 pesos or about $30. The best advice I can give you regarding this is go towards Supermercado Playero and make a left in front of it where all the dominicans get the taxis and you can get the same half price as everyone else. The Taxi Sosua Cabarete stand in front of the casino near Morua Mai and Hotel Sosua Bay standard prices are twice that of what you will be charged at the other taxi stand. Nowadays I get taxis there and get the phone numbers to use them when I need them to pick me up at my hotel or condo.

I cannot figure out why the dominicans clothing stores wish to charge us different prices then they do the locals. I know we have more money then they do, but, if they charge us some ridiculus price, then we dont buy it and they lose a sale. Yes, take a PUBLICO in front of Texaco on the highway! One seat costs RD30, so buy the whole car or the two front seats. It will be more, late at night, Gdogg and I paid RD250 total from Sosua to Puerto Plata. Obviously negotiate the price before getting in, and make sure they have the "medallion" that says taxi!

Dude, you can hang in the lobby or in the front of the spot and pull bitches all night long. The bathroom is outside of the club.

I got to say After One can go head to head with any club in NYC, the spot is very nice. Of course you got your birds running around but they have some serious dimes in there.

As far the entry fee, if you hit Classicos earlier in the night they charge 200 pesos, you get a free drink and a wristband for After One later, no entry fee with the wristband.

I went there 3 nights out of 5 and had the time of my life.
one thing is they constantly have the waiters asking you if want to buy a drink. I kept my drinks flowing all night, so it didn't bother me much, but if I was a non drinker, it would have pist me off.

The ASS parade is definitely a sight to behold. Once all them bars close they ALL go to after one.

While this is certainly true in tourist areas of the DR or pretty much any tourist area. . . . ..not as true in dominican cities and towns. In malls and stores in the DR that have prices marked on items we all pay the same price.

If I go into a shoe store in acropolis and turn the shoe over. . . .there is one price not two. I pay the same as locals. I am going to pricesmart to shop today. . . .again one price.

The real difference is if you are a tourist or not. Gringos that live here or can act like they live here pay the same.

SOP in DR. In santo domingo I call Taxi apoloor taxi lino. . . .they have radios. . . . .if there is doubt about what they charge.. . . .I tell them to call the base and ask the tarifa. . . .in fact with Taxi apollo the only time I was ripped off. . . . .

A Dominican girl from santiago was visiting me. I dropped her off at a corner where the apollo taxis wait for radio calls and headed to airport. When I got to the states and called her she said the taxi driver charged her 250 pesos to go to caribe tours. Should have been 130 pesos. She was pissed. . . .I said now you know what it feels like to be a gringo.

Heck taxis at JFK years ago would charge people 100 bucks to go from one terminal to another. . .. .ripping off foreign tourists. Now they make it hard for any non official taxi to work JFK. In the DR use radio taxis and not tourist taxis and you will be fine.
