The new Australian Ambassador to the Dominican Republic, John Michell sees areas for Australian investment or trade in the DR in the sugar industry, mining, dairy products, wines, and alternative energy power generation. Michell spoke at a gathering sponsored by the Commonwealth Roundtable at the Chamber of Commerce of Santo Domingo yesterday.

The president of the Commonwealth in the DR, Fernando Gonzalez Nicolas said the new openness with Australia brings new political, commercial and investment opportunities for the DR with Australia. Ambassador Michell presented his credentials to President Fernandez last week. It is the first time that an Australian ambassador is accredited to the Dominican government. Up till now the Australian Embassy in Ottawa, Canada has covered the DR. Michell is based in Port of Spain, Trinidad.
