Mongering in Punta Cana is not much different than anywhere else …. and I do mean anywhere! It is just that Sosua, (“a holy place” Don Thomas, I think, coined) … is where certain punta behavior is expected, and there are a substantial number of establishments openly catering to the process.
There are the same things happening in Punta Cana that happen in Sosur … the only difference is that is not as forward and obvious. And you have to work for what you are accustom to in the more “holy places.”
Punta Cana is composed of dozens of huge all inclusive resorts on arguably one of the longest and most beautiful beaches in the Caribbean. Only Cuba, supposedly, has a better and longer one.
So there are plenty of Dominican women working in the hotels, and playing at night.
This trip was with wifey. We had to pick a place at the last minute. We found a non-stop roundtrip all inclusive three days before departure for 720 USD (March 3, 2008), 6 days 5 nights only the transfers were not included. This all inclusive, “Tropical Alisios Bavaro” included unlimited weak drinks and palatable food served on their schedule.
I wanted to go to Caberete … (within striking distance of La Passion’s SEG) … but she wanted PC.
But I digress …. A seven minute walk out the back door of our hotel was a local bar not unlike Dominoes and the others in Sosua. Across the street was a “Sports Bar” that was even more local. If you began to walk to Cortecito there were even more. I understand that in Cortecito proper (not on the beach) there is plenty of local contact. But you need the language. The street hawking (in Cortecito) is the most relentless I have ever experienced.
I met a Brit early on who had been there more than myself and supposedly had a GF further up the strip past Cortecito who did not know he was in town yet. He was planning on spending a year to learn the language and start a business. He was ensconced inside the most inexpensive All Inclusive in the area he praying that the “chica network” will keep him undercover for another week or two. He had visited more than two dozen times and he knew the ropes.
So I take wifey up to look at the closest neighborhood hangout, The Petite Garden in daytime. The night before the Brit had been escorted by the hotel’s head of security because he was told the place was close to a brothel at that hour of night. YES!!!! But this is 3 PM. So I set out with wifey in hand. We find a new supermarket we could have used earlier. Look around a spanking new plaza … when I suggest a Presidente across the street “at the nigh time brothel.”
This “is” the DR and there is little or no mistake that you can “play for pay” wherever and whenever you choose.
The bartenders were ready for the evening and there were four “not so bad” chicas making fierce eye contact over the shoulder of the wife.
We ran into the Brit … midday no less, sucking on a Presidente (only Brahma was served in the hotel in small plastic cups.) Every instinct I have honed suggests that the Brit had found something to tap into up there. He introduced us to a Black Dutchman who was equally fun to talk to and share notes, especially when the wife hit the WC.
These guys were having a great time fully working “undercover” or in the shadows. Which is how you need to do it when you do not have the open expectations of Sosuer?
So the moral of my story is that a good time can be had all most anywhere in the DR. The same rules of Sosua apply but it must be discrete.
There was also a disco named Mangu very nearby that sounds like a Classico. It reportedly had two separate dance floors and was open every night.
I noticed what looked like neat clean Cabanas at every turn.
You need to identify a local cabana, and/or provide a good tip to your night watchman to make it more like experience in a “Holy Places.”
My excuse for going there alone or with my wingman is to golf. So with a car and a good wingman I hope to make another trip report very shortly.
I will try to post a few pictures next.
