The navy has informed that coastal surveillance aimed at impeding illegal trips to Puerto Rico involves the use of 1,498 men along 15,000 kilometers of coast, 22 small boats located on river mouths, and a monthly expenditure of about RD$15 million. From January to April, the navy was able to stop 159 trips, destroyed 128 boats, and indicted 81 organizers and boat captains. Among those arrested are 43 Haitians, 25 Cubans and 5 Chinese, according to a report by Listin Diario. Dominican authorities still need to improve their logistical marine surveillance work. For example, new vehicles for the movement of personnel along the coastline are required.
