Dominican boxer Juan Carlos Payano defeated Cuban contender Andry Laffita to win the gold medal in the Americas Olympic Qualifier event that took place 12-18 March in Port of Spain, Trinidad & Tobago. This is the second time the Dominican flyweight defeats his formidable contender. The first time was in February, during the Independence Cup held in Santiago de los Caballeros, in the DR. The previous evening, Payano had defeated Jose Saint, and qualified for the Beijing Olympics.
Cuban boxers dominated the event, with nine fighters claiming one of the 23 Olympic spots on offer at the Trinidad Events.
