Canadian woman slain in Dominican Republic
April 04, 2010
MONTREAL—A Canadian woman has allegedly been murdered on her ranch in the Dominican Republic.
According to media reports, Quebecer Louise Gaudreault was found stabbed to death Thursday morning.
The 54-year-old had been living in the Caribbean country for 25 years, where she owned land near the resort town of Cabarete.
Foreign Affairs confirmed Sunday there was an incident in the Dominican Republic that involved a Canadian citizen but refused to give further details.
This is the second death of a Quebecer in the country in recent months.
In December, a 42-year-old Quebec man was found dead in a private villa 25 kilometres from Puerto Plata.
the chicas that i chat with every now and then tell me that it is a little dangerous there. i think on my next trip, i am going to take extra cautions when there, in addition to that i already do.
Very scant on the details............., nothing about a husband.
geez.......that is like the 6th expat in 6 months.....unbelievable
This is why I always carry. Obviously not a traditional weapon. A SureFire flashlight. Bright enough to blind in daylight, scalloped edges on both ends. Kind of expensive, but worth it the first time it's needed. Never had an issue with customs, including my January trip when I got the full search routine comiing into JFK.
There haven't been many stories of chicas pulling on foreign customers, but 99% carry some form of blade.
I'm happy to show anyone who runs into me on the island.
A flashlight? Interesting.
Do you think that would have given some form of protection to Louise, who by the way was less than 5' tall and weighed 90 pounds, against her alleged attacker(s) armed with knifes and machetes?
By the way it is being reported that a fellow Canadian is the prime suspect according to the police.
Probably not sufficient in that circumstance, but I doubt the outcome would have been made worse. Something is better than nothing, though in her own house she must have been surprised, or I would guess a kitchen knife would have been picked up. I didn't know the lady or the situation.
Agreed if this report is correct. The Canadian guy has now been arrested and charged, and they are saying he used scissors.

A Frenchman was found hanging from a tree in the courtyard of his house in Nagua, in the María Trinidad Sánchez province. Police reports say there were no other signs of injury or violence.
Francois Jean Paul Dubuet, 59 years old, was living with a young girl, Aracelis Canela Rosario. She told police investigators in Nagua that Dubuet had got up early on Sunday to make coffee, but when he did not return she went looking for him and found him hanging from a mango tree.
According to stories in the area, the Frenchman was being harassed by the relatives of a minor, with whom he was allegedly cohabiting. These relatives had supposedly demanded RD$200,000 not to report this to the authorities.
It also emerged that Dubuet had a fight several weeks ago with two thieves attempting to steal from his home.
The investigations of this case are in charge of National Police Major Maldonado, who heads the Crimes and Homicide Section of the Nagua police.
And they say Colombia is dangerous!
