Easier to assume that in DR every man (and some women) is carrying.
Hell, even my mother has a .22 in her purse. When I saw it I made a joke that she didn't know how to use it. She told me she's been shooting guns since she was 11 years old in the campo. Something that in 30 years I never knew about her.

Heres an idea, Dont get into any confrontations with the Locals and you wont have to ever worry about it ,esp when they are drinking as was said. Unless you got a national army guy standing next to you just dont argue with these fuckers at all and focus on the chicas. As Ruckus said, just assume everyone is packing .
You guys are only looking at the negative side of this, carrying can can also prevent things from popping off. Its the great equalizer. Your chances of getting hit by a stray are no greater & probably a lot less than a car running you down as you are crossing the street.

A lot of those carrying guns are plain-clothes police. Dominican Billy told me that there are as many of them on the streets as uniformed officers.

Forgive my ignorance on my following question, but.... I am assuming that there is no law enforcement on carrying guns in the DR? I was talking to a guy who has been going to POP for over 12 years and he said "All the dominican men carry guns tucked in their waist, its called domincan style". When I recovered from my shock I asked him "well isnt it illegal to have a pistol down here?" He started laughing and said "No, it isnt against the law. Everyone done here walks around with a gun, only us gringos cant have a fire arm but all the domincan guys do".
So is it a situation where it is illegal to own a gun but the police dont enforce it. Or can anyone walk around with a gun on thier person like Gunsmoke?

It's hard to tell who the plainclothes cops are though. I was eating at Baileys and a guy aprox 30 with his pistola clearly visible and his very hot chica of about 19 both sat down to eat. I was already seated and directly facing them, so not like i was spying on them, just observing.
He got a call, and they could not finish their meal, only when he did not even pay and just let the waiter know he had to go, did i realize he was a cop and not at Tiguere.(unless Baileys is now feeding Tigueres for free)
But I thought since he didnt even have an inside pant leather holster and just had his postola in his jeans, he cant be a cop.. but i was wrong..

It is illegal to carry a firearm without a permit. Many of my Dominican friends carry and few have the proper documentation. Like they say in America "I'd rather be tried by nine than carried by six"

It's perfectly legal to carry a gun there if you've obtained the permit to do so. I was told that you'll have hell to pay if you're caught with a gun for which you don't have a permit.

not something I'm accustomed to seeing when I'm in a bar......
haven't seen any pistols when I've been in Boca Chica or La Capital but they are around......

I know the little man and his name is Eferme (spelling?). He strikes me as an easy-going guy, he's probably carrying for his own protection against his fellow Dominicans.
I know he probably does a little drug-dealing on the side, I've seen him palm-off money and small baggies in Rumba.
I wouldn't be scared of him, and I seriously doubt he'll pull a gun on a gringo unless the gringo is threatening him with serious bodily harm.
One of the funniest things I've ever seen in Clasicos was Eferme getting a lap dance by 6 chicas.....the look on his face was priceless........
I buy him a beer every once in awhile, it's good to have some Dominican friends around town........

Your assumption is incorrect. You know those cops that pull you over looking for a propina? That situation will change in a hurry if they see a firearm and you don't have a permit. If you're carrying and a cop asks you for your gun permit and you can't provide it, you're going straight to jail.
