The surviving victims said that the suspects were Haitian. They could very well be or he could have said that fearing retribution from the guys if they were Dominican.

Re: murder in sosua again. Is this true ?

Most crimes are blamed on Haitians. It is an easy "solve" for police statistics and keeps all the locals happy. And as El Toro says, it saves Dominicans from the dilemma of having to give evidence against other Dominicans with the strong possibility of reprisals. Think the USA in the Jim Crow days.

Also Haitians are less likely to own guns. They are expensive and ownership attracts attention whereas Dominican ownership would be more accepted.

Of course, that doesn't mean the criminals weren't Haitians. Haitians may be more desperate and reckless as they have less to lose. No doubt Haitians commit more than their share of crimes in relation to their percentage of the population, which is around 10%, but nothing like the number which the police and press attribute to them, which is more like 80%.

I have heard about dozens of these incidents (robberies, murders, kidnappings and other lurid events) in the seven years I have been coming to, and living in, the DR. The one thing I have learned for sure is we gringos never learn the real story, or at least, the whole story. For example there was a Dominican on Dominican killing in Puerto Plata a few years back that was discussed at length on DR1 and in the local papers as the motive was obscure. About two years later I found out that the killer and victim were half-brothers. That pertinent fact was certainly never mentioned in all the endless reporting and speculation at the time, though all the locals would have been aware of it.

Charamicos is in Sosua. You mean not in El Batey. In fact Charamicos was the original township when El Batey was just a sugar plantation.

But if you mean gringos going about their lawful business in any part of Sosua are very safe, you would be quite right. If they don't get aggressive drunk, take drugs and aren't involved in some borderline business like money-lending they will be as safe as in any other holiday town round the world (except Torquay).

That would make you more of a target, not less. Remember more than half the cops in the DR are in plain clothes. If you were unlucky enough to be near some situation, cops seeing a guy with a gun who is not one of their own might get nervous and decide to get their shot in first. They would know that if they shot someone carrying a gun they would be unlikely to be prosecuted or even disciplined.

I remember hearing about this place a few years ago. Heavily armed security guards threatening anyone who got close to the property. I recall seeing a video of a piece that the German equivalent to 60 Minutes did on this guy. This is not far from where I stay when I am in town.
