05/2014 - Hotel Plaza Europa Reviews and Updates.

I visited with Diego, the owner of Hotel Plaza Europa in April with "Shark Bar" Lou. Had a great time. Diego mentioned he was making several changes at the property including opening the restaurant (although I think he is renting it out to another businessman). Their website just underwent a redesign after 8 years, more easily accessible on mobile devices. Room rates are currently $34/night plus tax. I briefly mentioned ISOC to him since I knew a few members that have stayed there...but he didn't recognize our group. I have never stayed at the property. Anyone stayed there lately and have a review to share?

Festy, I've been interested in this hotel also but have never stayed there. From my research I've heard mixed reviews. Seems to me that maybe some of the rooms are nice and others are shitty. Maybe its the luck of the draw depending on which room you get when you check in.

In 1997 this was the best monger hotel around. It went downhill and i guess he just woke up.

Essexboy stayed there during his 6 week visit fairly recently.

I met him there a couple of times and he didn't tell me he had any problems there but with his daily cuba libre intake I'm not sure if he would have known anyway

Yeah, I met essexboy there last year in August. He showed me his room, not modern but clean and large enough for my liking. LOL, his dailiy cuba libre intake may have cost more than his daily room rate. I will probably give them a try next trip. Good price for short term too although that 18% tax still "burns my biscuits".

You pay that everywhere. The only difference is some places include it the price and others show it separately. Not just for hotel rooms, but for almost everything you buy. I think medical treatment and some medicines are exempt? Probably children's necessities and also printed material, too?

We Europeans are so used to it we never comment on it nowadays (except when they raise the rate!). I think it is the fairest way to raise taxes.

Back in the day many rooms had issues.

Weyland is right. It is the fairest tax of all. We in Canada have a 5% tax on top of provincial taxes. It is fair because everyone pays it for all goods and services. It is much fairer than income tax or an excise tax. If you don't want to pay the tax, don't buy something. Income tax is unfair because it leaves you no choice.

Back in the days, they did have some negative reviews. I stayed there often, usually when the New Garden is fully booked and never had a problem. You can't beat the price and what your getting for it. IMHO i think their rooms are better than the rooms of Seabreeze, the non bungalos rooms at Casa Cayena and Rockys. I visited the place back in late Sept, early Oct. when a friend of mines stayed there and they have certainly upgraded the rooms and there was still renovation going on. If you go on Trip Advisor, you're going to read a majority positive review.

The ad says "starts at $34"

I wonder how many rooms are at that price.

Lou's doing great. I ran in to Lou at Yayow's in Boca Chica back in April. We hung out in Boca Chica, then went to Santiago before making it to Sosua. Good trip, took the winding road through the mountain from Stgo to Sosua. Great views and ice cold beers along the route. Not sure too many know as much about Sosua than Lou. GREAT source of info. Don't be surprised to find him at the Europa corner bar. Just listen for his trademark intro, "HOW ARE YOU BEY-BEE?"

Diego said that was the "Low Season" rate and would change during "High Season" but did not say what the rate would be.

And all rooms are the same price. Discount given for something like 3+ weeks. Can't remember exactly that part of our conversation.

Re: 05/2014 - Hotel Plaza Europa Reviews and Updates.

My understanding is the Diego sold his interest in the Hotel Europa to an Italian gentleman named Andrea. He has been renovating rooms and there are some updated photos on the website at http://www.hotelplazaeuropa.com/ as well as at their Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/pages/Hotel...30782653678731

Has anyone had a chance to stay in any of the updated rooms? I am going back in September and trying to see what my options are.

Re: 05/2014 - Hotel Plaza Europa Reviews and Updates.

I recently stayed at the Hotel Europa and can say everything is currently under construction. There was a lot of noise due to this fact. The room I was in was like an efficiency with a kitchen etc. I was satisfied with the service and if the renovations meet my liking I wouldn't mind doing a long term stay for around $500.00 a month in the future.

    Below is my review...

    Hotel Europa

Welcome to the Dominican Republic where anything can happen. I made a reservation for Hotel Colibri and arrived to find it closed. I walked to Hotel Europa and they had room so I will rest my head here for the tail end of my trip. I stayed there before a couple of years ago and the only problem I had was the street noise from Pedro Clisante. The hotel is quite dated and currently being renovated. During the day noise could be heard from men working therefore my biggest complaint would be the noise. The WIFI air-conditioning and hot water were very good.
The room is an efficiency style apartment I may consider long term here if I decide to settle in Sosua we shall see.

Re: 05/2014 - Hotel Plaza Europa Reviews and Updates.

I stayed at the Europa back in January. Rooms were very nice, solid WiFi signal all over the property (several routers scattered throughout the place). Corner bar was jamming every night. Good mix of locals and visitors. Shark Bar Lou and Bobbie were there too. I think they raised their prices but still a good value.

I'm thinking of going back next month. 3rd and 4th of July only $70 total..can't beat $35/night for a small apartment. Anyone else going down at that time?
