01/2017 - New Year's Eve and forward in Sosua

There were many friends and family around for this trip....which is a good thing but complicated. Mobility and the need for "plans" and restaurant reservations .... and trying to get a consensus from a dozen people....about ANYTHING! Fuck that...I'M ON VACATION!

Try finding seats, for 8-12, in almost any restaurant in Sosua, in "high season in January" without a reservation. Even if they manage to squeeze you in the service is gonna suck and the kitchen will be overloaded. Been there, done that last February LOL

I would have liked to travel. Had 2 invites to Barahona for example, a few to visit inThe Capital, Santiago and various other places but simply couldn't break away. Obligations....


Victorian House could have handled our group but they're closed....

Bourbon Street, during the day, on PC likewise. Not sure for dinner as this group would not want to be at ground zero for the mongering nightlife lol. And....I don't really like the food there. Ate there in July and it was only ok. almost decent. But would not repeat.

Maura Mai could do it, and the food and service is awesome but... could not get people to agree. So a buddy and I went for lunch and it was excellent!

“SCOTCH 'N' SIRLOIN RESTAURANT” at Terra Linda Hotel could normally handle it too but again, it's not what our visitors wanted in the DR, on vacation..... We did eat breakfast there 2 or 3 times and a lunch??? The food is decent, breakfast is pretty good but expect higher than average pricing for Sosua. Monday - Friday they do "American" style breakfast before 11ish for 195RD IIRC....but not on weekends. Got caught by that BS...AGAIN!!! LOL The joy of not knowing what day it is


But we managed to schedule and reserve for a few large gatherings and they went well. The food and service great as expected and virtually no complaints. Amazing really.

We ate at our favorite places, revisited a few that can be good or not so good, and tried some new. Didn't get to all that I would have liked but never do. I saw a couple of newer...less than a year old?...Dominican places on the road off PC, Camino del Llibre, near where "The Spot" used to be. Didn't go inside but on another trip....definitely. I didn;t eat "la Bandera" even once this trip. But I did eat mangu....and pussy lol

There were many new businesses, some old ones closed, closing or completely missing and lots of construction. More or less like normal. Interesting, to me at least, the fucking sidewalks they'd started in what...June last year and STILL NOT FINISHED! That sums up the DR to me.

Strangely the beach was busy when we were there. LOT's of couples and families. Tourists. It was about as bust as 2006/7

Normally there are very few people, paying customers, especially tourists on the beach on most trips.

17 restaurants that I can think of....multiple repeats at many and less than 13 full days = too many meals! LOL (and I weighed less when I returned home than when I left....)

Ottimo X6?- 3 breakfast and 3 dinners

Ostaria Toscano X3? 4?

Elephante Rosso X2 1st and Last stops

Bailey's X3, 4? NOT my favorite place but better than before, mostly, and it's a crowd pleaser

New Garden X4? More? 2 dinner 2 breakfast

Casa Valeria X1 breakfast

El Rancho X4, 5? 2 breakfast (excellent eggs and rolls) 2 or 3 dinners Closed Wednesdays

Scotch & Sirloin X4, 5? 3 breakfast and 1 or 2 lunch/dinner. They did very well off of us especially considering that I hate their business model and practices.....

Maura Mai X1 lunch

El Velero X2 lunches

El Toro Negro X2 lunches

Orchidee X3 dinners

La Finca X2 dinners plus a stop just for Escargot!

El Conde X2 dinners and multiple stops for coffee!

Big D's X2 Lunches

Yamazoto Cabarete X1 Expensive but delicious lunch! Over $100 USD for 2 plus one bento box

Roasted in the same roasters as cacao beans imparting chocolatey aromas on the coffee. Regretfully preground so not for the cafe snobs amongst us!

I go there a couple of times when I´m in Sosua. The food always tastes delicious and Tilo is very friendly and hard working.
