Have you subscribed to the Trip Report section? I would do so at least up to the time of your visit, whenever that is. Worth the small outlay for entertainment value alone. And you will probably save the cost in money-saving tips and pitfalls avoided.

I wouldn't worry about HIV if you always wear condoms. More likelihood of being killed crossing the road in DR.

This place may lack the quality and variety of Brazil but you will have a great time here, especially if you stick with the Fennophiles. And you already have some Spanish so you are good to go.
