The Ministry of Public Health says that 80% of those who have caught Covid-19 disease recently had not been vaccinated despite the availability of vaccines. The pace of young people getting vaccinated is slower than expected. The Ministry attributes the present spike to the high mobility in Greater Santo Domingo and the relaxing of preventive measures. The spread is concentrated in the capital city and nearby urban areas.
Despite mass vaccinations, government regulations, and the notable increase of positive tests among younger persons, the barrios of the Greater Santo Domingo continue to party on. With a reported 1,600 new cases between Friday and Saturday, perhaps 15 deaths attributed to the virus, people continue to ignore the most basic protocols to avoid contracting the virus: keeping physical distancing, face masks and hand hygiene.
As a result of this attitude, there has been a notable spike in positive cases over the past two weeks, and the government hospitals are scurrying to habilitate more beds for patients Covid-19 virus. Many hospitals had removed beds from the Covid-19 units when cases were down. But, as happened in Singapore and Taiwan, overconfidence has produced this increase in cases.
