    motorcycle rentals

I have seen some info but has anybody recently rented a decent bike in sousa, whats required to rent and how was your experience, I will be staying at the FOD so I figured instead of cabbing it the whole time I could just rent a bike and cut all the bullshit out. Just so you know I ride a bike here in the states so Im an experienced rider. Also how far of a trip is it from FOD to sosua and FOD to POP. Thanx.

As far as a decent bike rental location I rented my bike from Jihad at the Sea Breeze Hotel. They are new and he has a few of them. Make sure you bring your passport he may take a copy of it for the rental and returns everything once you return the bike. Jihad charges (the cheapest prices by far!!!) $35/day for non Sea Breeze occupants and if my mind does not fail me $30/day (it may be $25/day) for Sea Breeze occupants. YOU CAN BARGAIN WITH HIM!!! He also supplies a helmet which they are cracking down on except on Sundays.

    Re: motorcycle rentals

There are plenty of scooters and little 125 dirt bikes that you can rent for $18-$20 a day. I suggest bringing a drivers license (expired preferably). Do not give your passport to rent a bike. If they insist move on. I have rented numerous times from a few places (not the one described above though so cannot comment). You can definitely negotiate a price for a few days. I also suggest taking a test drive of a decent distance in the area your renting from and looking over the bike as best you can because a lot of them are not in the best of shape. Some look fine until your driving it for a while or notice theres no oil, some lights dont work etc. Also check if it has a helmet as you might need it or be forced to buy one at a roadcheck.

Also keep paperwork with you at all times while riding or it will most likely be towed at one of those checkpoint road stops.

I paid with cash and no deposit required at least I did not pay any. IDK know much about the size but it did the trick for me for 2 days

No problems, with the quality, price, or safety of the bike, when I rented from Jihad @ Seabreeze Hotel. I don't have a problem with leaving my passport with jihad. You can usually get a better price with a longer rental.

    Re: motorcycle rentals

Last trip I rented from Nelson Rent A Car and Motor Bike.

An alternate phone number is 809-320-4625.

They are located about a mile west of FOD ... on the main highway (Right side of the road). An easy walk from FOD.

I rented a 200cc Chinese bike ... asking price $45/day, but I talked to Nelson in person and got him down to $35/day on a one week rental. (BTW ... Nelson speaks perfect English).

They supplied a helmet included in the rental. It wasn't real comfortable ...next trip I'll bring my own ... in case I decide to actually wear one ... the visor makes a good rain deflector!

I recommend the 200 cc bike because it has much more power, acceleration, and speed. When someone tried to pass me in an area where I was not comfortable, I'd pick up speed and stay out front until there was an area I was comfortable with being passed. Also ... at the traffic lights you have enough power to get a jump on the pack, and get out front. If they can't catch you they can't hit you!

I paid in advance (cash no problem), showed my passport, and left an imprint of my Visa card as a damage deposit.

In the event of a total loss ... I would be held responsible for a maximum of $1000US ... I'm not sure if any insurance was available, I didn't ask.

When I dropped off the bike they did a check for damage, found none, returned my Visa imprint and gave me a ride back to the FOD ... the service was great ... and I will rent from Nelson again on my next visit!

I wouldn't be caught dead on one of the 100 or 125 cc bikes ... with them you may have very limited options if you find yourself in a dicey traffic situation!

That helps, but you really gotta be aware of the way the dominicans view right-of-way. It's kind of whoever-gets-there-first....

The best place to view this in Sosua is the corner of Harrisons Jewlers on Pedro clisante. Sit at the coffee bar and watch the traffic on a weekday morning when everybodys going to work, school, deliverys, etc.

It's a sight to behold if you've never seen it before. And educational.

Yeah thats some funny shit. I know the drivers be on some shit down there , but regardless of where you drive a bike you always have to be more aware of other peoples driving if you are trying to keep your ass safe.

Actually since so many people ride scooters and bikes there the drivers seem to be more aware of then drivers in the states but I still took the same precautions as I would here.

Last time I was down I got a scooter like in the video from the Wilbert Bank rental place 4 days for 75 bucks. Chilimike said they got a few for for 15/day at another place, not sure which one but shop around and make offers, most places will come off those high prices.

Glad that worked out for you. Just a tip for guys that may rent bikes . . . ..NEVER. . . give them your passport. . . . . only a copy.

I tried to rent a scooter in Sosewer once. First the guy says he needs copy of my passport so I send ex novia to room to get it. Then as she is walking in he says. . ."you realize I hold your passport for security and give it back when the scooter is returned"?

I said give me my deposit back! You can bet if I had rented that pasola he would have it "stolen" one night when he saw it parked on the strip. He would then tell me I owe him for a new one. . . .and when I say get lost. . . . remind me he has my passport. . . . . .
